Do check with your hardware store, but 1/4" mesh may not resist rats for long. But what's in there that they really want any way? Hope you've found some protection for the wires too. Silly things like color of plastic might be part of the attraction. Would a rat sampler test which ones they do/don't like? Great work as usual, implementing another fresh idea!
